This…

…is obviously a work in progress. I’ve tried blogging aside my own buffmuscles site before, and just didn’t run with it. Might not work out this time either. [A self-fulfilling prophecy?]

I might keep these posts limited to an occasional movie review, or some such thing. Dunno.

Any ideas?

Angels & Demons

2009 June 2
by Sean Scott
I saw “Angels & Demons” last weekend, and although I don’t consider myself a movie reviewer (despite the fact that the only two personal posts to my blog here have to do with movies), I do consider myself a person who can express an opinion.
and1So, here’s mine, about this movie: Good cinematography and directing, but the believability factor left me rolling my eyes a few times.

I liked “The Da Vinci Code” but I found the same problem in that flick as well.

It seems that everywhere Tom Hanks turns in “Angels & Demons,” some marble statue is pointing in a specific direction, leading our leading man further down the path toward solving the mystery. There are only so many statues that point in the right direction, in my opinion. And besides, why would the bad guys plan everything so that these statues are pointing the way to find them?

Like I said, believability factor lacking.

Beside being incredible, the plot was often very predictable. Four Cardinals are to be killed on the hour (and now that I think of it, I can’t for the life of me remember why…), and our dear Professor Langdon (Hanks) somehow always gets to the Cardinal just a few minutes too late. Who knew?

Well, I won’t ruin the movie with a spoiler here, but at least the ending doesn’t end up being quite as predictable as the rest of the movie.

All in all, I suggest you wait for the DVD.

Star Trek

I saw the latest “Star Trek” movie today, and it was good. Very good.

ent1I’ve read some reviews, and almost all of them agreed that it was a good movie. Most of them said that even people who aren’t necessarily familiar with the Star Trek franchise would enjoy the movie. I’d agree, but I’d add that even though you don’t have to be a Star Trek fan to enjoy the flick, it would probably be helpful to at least be someone who enjoys science fiction.

There was a lot of action in this movie– a lot of bust-em-up-shoot-the-fazers action. I liked that, and yet I fear those who don’t like science fiction might be thrown off by it. This isn’t “Little House on the Prairie.”

That said, allow me to move on to some of the cast members. Thank you. Our young Captain Kirk, played by Chris Pine, is one HOT dude. Any gay guy worth his salt will be googling and IMDB-ing Chris as soon as he gets home from the theater. He’s just a really, really good-looking guy. I could watch his visage for hours.

And then there’s Zachary Quinto, who plays our young Spock. I know that some have said that ol’ Zac isn’t that good looking, but I beg to differ. Ever since I first saw him as the mysterious Sylar in the NBC series “Heroes,” I was in love. In my book (which is actually quite thick) he is one hunkalicious dude. Really good looking. Sure, there’s not much (if any) muscle there, but Zachary Q. is, IMHO, someone with whom I’d eagerly spend a night.

Aside from that, the movie is good. There is a nagging issue regarding what happened to the planet Vulcan; SPOILER ALERT!!: it is destroyed in the movie, and thus one wonders where the heck it went, since it definitely exists in the Star Trek universe of the future (maybe this is their way of allowing for a new sequel to the prequel?). Additionally, the special-effects and technology of the movie is obviously more cool than the ’60’s TV series (one wonders how it degraded for the TV series), and yet, the viewer seems to be asked to forgive that minor issue– which, IMHO, is easy to do with this movie.

The characters are remarkably believable, with respect to their future incarnations in the TV reruns. Your average gay guy will love the precarnation of Lt. Uhura. She’s delicious, and if she ever makes an album, I’ll be tempted to replace my Cher vinyls with her’s. It’s totally fun to see Scotty, Sulu and Chekov in their formative years (the cute Chekov dude is only 17 {!} when he assumes the helm of the USS Enterprise!), and their characters are very believable in how they form a foundation for the ’60’s series.

In all, I heartily recommend the flick, in spite of my aforementioned objections. If you are a Trekker, you’ll love it. (BTW, my spell checker just ignored the word “Trekker.” I totally expected it to flag it! –Fascinating. Yeah, we must be in the 21st century, dude!) If you are a sci-fi aficionado, you’ll enjoy “Star Trek.” If you want “Little House on the Prairie,” keep looking. Michael Landon is out there, somewhere…

I request– no, urge– your response to my rambling. Please send me an email. Check the CONTACT link in the right margin. Thank you.

And, as always, thank you for being here!
